How to make the best of hostel life
Before booking the Hostel or P.g accommodation, go to the hostel’s website or look at sites like Hostelsearch.in to read comments left by previous lodgers. Be Aware that some hostels have a reputation for non-stop partying. Unless this is something you want to do, avoid them. Some hostels also may have Age limits. If so, the website will specify them.
If you have trouble climbing stairs, see if there’s an elevator or rooms Available at ground level. Remember, that “first floor” in some countries is the same as “second floor” in the U.S. If this could be a problem, be sure to check before you book.You will be responsible for getting your own bags to the room. This Frequently involves stairs – sometimes steep, narrow stairs. If you don’t do it already, now’s a great time to learn to pack light. Sometimes you can leave an unwieldy bag in the luggage lock room. Then you can just unpack what you need and take it up to your Room.
Be aware that many hostel dorm rooms have bunk beds. I prefer the upper bunk because there’s more headroom. The disadvantage is, of course, getting up and down. The lower bunk is more easily accessible but sometime can be a little claustrophobic because there’s someone directly over you.The location of your room can make a real difference in the amount of noise you hear at night. If you need quiet in order to sleep, avoid rooms over busy streets If you’re a light sleeper, an inexpensive pair of earplugs could be a stellar investment.
The foam kind is cheaper and more comfortable to sleep in. The rubber ones are more efficient but they stick out, making it difficult to sleep on your side. Some people prefer an I-Pod or MP-3 player to block outside noise.Some people may also want to wear a sleep mask. If you’re having a long-term stay, try to do as much laundry by hand as you Can. You can use liquid laundry soap, Woolite or even shampoo or shower gel.
Dry the clothes on your bedrails or get a special clothesline from a Travel store that doesn’t need clothespins. Of course, some items like jeans and heavy sweaters don’t hand-wash well and can take forever to air dry.Some hostels will do a big bag of laundry for a reasonable price and, if you don’t have enough to stuff the bag full, see if anyone wants to share. I never travel without a small empty water bottle, a blow-up plastic hanger and a small clip-type hanger for pants.
Some hostels don’t have hot water 24/7. Even in “civilized” places, the hot water can be shut off in the afternoons. It’s a good idea to know what the hours are so you don’t get caught with soapy hair because it can change quite suddenly.

How to make the best of hostel life
When most people think hostel, it’s in the context of scruffy young backpackers, not more mature travelers. Certainly, if you’re looking for posh amenities or someone to carry your bags, you’d be better off in a hotel. But, if you’re a close-to-the-ground type of traveler and particularly if you’re on a budget, staying in a hostel can be a really good option.
The first advantage has already been mentioned: price. Accommodation can take the biggest chunk by far out of your traveling budget. Even staying in places like student dormitories, convents or monasteries can be surprisingly pricey, particularly in cities like Rome, London or San Francisco. Staying in hostels can free up a lot of your travel money and can make the difference between having the occasional nice meal out and eating at McDonalds. If money is particularly tight, it can even mean the difference between getting to travel and staying home.
Security is foremost in most people’s minds when they travel and with good reason. Most (if not all) hostels have CCTV cameras in all the common rooms and virtually all lock their doors at night. (You can still get in, but cheapest) restaurants and the locations of the better-stocked and most- reasonably-priced grocery stores. They can also be invaluable on advising Sharing a room with three to seven other people may not be everyone’s cup
Of tea but it can be great fun! It’s nice to be in a single-sex room, if possible. It won’t give you any more privacy (and may cut down on available bathroom time) but privacy doesn’t seem to matter as much when everyone is the same gender.
A lot of hostels have en-suite rooms, each room with its own bathroom. This is nice in that you can leave your toothbrush and shower things in place instead of taking them back and forth. Remember, though, that the single toilet/shower can end up being shared by up to 10 people, depending on the number of beds in the room. If one of them is a bathroom hog, it can be a bit of a problem.
Most people staying in dorm rooms are respectful of others. They try to be quiet while others are sleeping (whether late at night or early in the morning) and keep bathroom time reasonable. Still, you may encounter a roommate who is loud, obnoxious and self-centered. If you want to avoid conflict, you could simply ask to be moved to another room. But if you’re annoyed, the rest of your roommates probably are too.
A positive attitude is the most important thing you can take with you when you travel no matter where you’re staying. Of course, everyone has ups and downs but looking on the bright side can have an enormous bearing on how much you enjoy yourself.
